Aric Hopper, a junior political science major and senator for off-campus, has been elected as president pro tempore for the Student Government Association.

The position was left vacant by Bryan Kubel who took the role of vice president on Sept. 10.

Former vice president Carli Hendershot resigned earlier this month after being hospitalized and diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression.

Moments after being named president pro tempore, Hopper said it was a surreal feeling.

“I was like, ‘This can’t be real, what’s going on here?’ but another part of me realized that of course this is real,” he said.

The candidates were required to give a five-minute presentation to the senate about who they are and what goals they would like to accomplish for the year. This was followed by a five-minute question-and-answer session.

One of the points Hopper made in his presentation was to make past SGA legislations and other resources available online.

"If they are online, you can access them whenever you want; it's paperless and easier to get a hold of,” he said. “For people who have disabilities or time constraints, it makes it easier for them to access.”

Vice president Bryan Kubel said he is pleased Hopper stepped up, and any one of the candidates would have made a great president pro tempore.

“It will be nice to finally get the senate back to normalcy because we have all our main positions filled," Kubel said. “We can start working and being efficient like we are supposed to do.”

Hopper said, through this position, he feels he can serve the university better.

According to senate bylaws, president pro tempore is responsible for orientation of new senators and for directing legislation passed by student senate to the university senate, in addition to several other responsibilities.
