WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win opening game at VCU Invitational

The Ball State women’s volleyball team overcame a slow start and defeated East Tennessee State 3-1 in the VCU Invitational on Friday. 

The Cardinals have won two straight matches, after snapping a five-match losing streak.

East Tennessee State jumped out to a 1-0 match advantage with a 25-12 victory in set one. The Cardinals then handled the Buccaneers in three straight sets, holding them to just 14 and 15 points in sets three and four.

Outside hitter Mackenzie Kitchel led the offensive charge for Ball State with 14 of the team’s 52 kills. Redshirt freshman Sabrina Mangapora had 13 kills for the Cardinals, while redshirt junior Amanda Raker tallied 10. Ball State hit .242 in the match.

Setter Jenna Spadafora accounted for 45 assists, while also recording four kills and seven digs.

Ball State had six total blocks in the game, led by Spadafora with four and Raker with three. 

Redshirt junior Alex Fuelling led two Cardinals in double digits with 19 digs. Sophomore Nikki Box had 11.

The Cardinals will continue play at 5 p.m. in Richmond, Va., as they take on the Virginia Cavaliers in their second game of the day.
