College can be an intimidating and stressful for freshman year, but it also can be the beginning of the best four years (or more) of your life. Two years ago, my father parked his car as I anxiously looked upon my new home, LaFollette Complex. I didn’t realize at the time how much my life would quickly change in the upcoming year.

Ball State provides one of the greatest experiences you may have. Here, you will meet new people, follow your dreams and make memories that will stay with you for a lifetime. So with this, make the best out of your years at the university.

After a month of staying in my room and only leaving for classes and food, I realized I wanted more. I wanted to actually experience college.

There is more than one way to do this. Join an organization, get involved in Greek Life, join a sports club or study abroad — there are so many options.

I’ll admit, as a freshman, I was scared to go to an organization for the first time by myself until I found a friend to go with me. If you find yourself in the same situation, grab a friend. You won’t regret it.

Being super involved isn’t always for everyone, though, and it’s important to learn when to say no to too many extracurricular activities. After all, you’re here to learn, so make sure your involvement doesn’t hinder your studies. Don’t learn that the hard way.

This may be your first year completely away from family, but don’t let it get to you. It can be hard, but try to create a good balance between your social life and your studies.

College is going to be a whole new experience, much different than high school. So take pride, fellow Cardinal, and live your life to the fullest.

And if you need a helping hand, don’t be afraid to email me or stop by my Student Government Association office at L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 112.
