Muncie adopts free emergency service

Mayor of Muncie Dennis Tyler announced Wednesday that the city will implement an emergency response service for all Muncie residents, free of charge.

The service, Smart911, is a product of AT&T Inc. and allows users to preregister a profile tied to their phone number and include information about their address, medical conditions, the presence of elderly or special care needs.

The profile is then used by Muncie's 911 dispatchers to save time collecting information during emergencies, Tyler said.

"Readily available, advanced information is an extremely valuable resource and can enable responders to make better decisions more quickly when lives and property are at risk," said Eddie Bell, Muncie Fire Chief, in a press release.

The service is projected to cost the city $32,000 for a three-year contract, Tyler said.

The city will also be putting an emergency text alert system into place. Rave Mobile Safety will provide the service and also manages Ball State's emergency alert system.

Tyler said after shutting down the city from this year's snowstorms, he realized the need for better forms of city-wide communications.

"I realized the thing we didn't have was a communication network between all of us," he said.
