Ball State lowers flags for law enforcement officers

On the order of Gov. Mike Pence, Ball State will lower its flags for the official period of mourning this week after the deaths of three law enforcement officers in the line of duty.

Pence ordered Monday to lower flags across the state during the period, which the governor is calling a "week of heartbreak."

Thirty-one-year-old Tipton County Deputy Jacob Calvin of Kempton died June 28 when his car crashed while he was responding to an automobile accident. Fifty-one-year-old Indianapolis Police Office Perry Renn died in a gun fight Saturday and 47-year-old Gary Police Officer Jeffrey Westerfield was found shot in his patrol car Sunday.

Pence said it's fitting that communities throughout the state show solidarity at this time.

"Every Hoosier feels the loss of these fallen officers and stands with their families and communities during this week of heartbreak," he said in a statement. "... I urge every Hoosier to remember the service and sacrifice of these men and their families during this official period of mourning."
