Billy Wright hired at Western Illinois

Today, a Ball State assistant head coach was introduced as head men’s basketball coach at Western Illinois.

Before serving as an assitant head coach for the men’s basketball team at Ball State during the 2013-14 season, Wright spent five years at Western Illinois, including three as associate head coach.

In his only year with the Cardinals, Wright worked under first-year head coach James Whitford. The Cardinals finished the season with a 5-25 record.

Wright said in a press release that he was grateful for the opportunity to coach at Ball State.

“Ball State gave me an opportunity to move back home, closer to family,” he said. “It was a great opportunity. I learned a lot in such a short time from head coach James Whitford. I learned a different way to teach the game of basketball, and I am very grateful for that opportunity.”

Previously, Wright coached at Indianapolis high schools for nearly a decade. He spent seven years at Pike High School, the final two as head coach.

Western Illinois finished the 2013-14 season with a 10-20 record overall, and a 4-10 mark in Summit League play.
