Check out WCRD’s playlist to get dancers ready
Even before the annual Dance Marathon kicked off at 2 p.m., the energy was surging.
Every time new students joined the group in the Field Sports Building, they were greeted with cheers and high-fives. This year, 1,584 students will stand and dance to raise money for Riley Children’s Hospital.
There are 31 kids and families from the hospital attending Dance Marathon this year. At the start of the event, the families and kids were introduced to the crowd as they walked through a cheering path of dancers on their way up to the stage.
Hayley Williams, a sophomore social work major, said she was most looking forward to seeing the Riley kids and hearing their stories.
“I do it because it’s for a good cause,” Williams said. “We’re able to stand to dance, so we do it for the kids who can’t.”
The first family that spoke was the Kurmay family, which has two children who were Riley patients – MaKenna and Maison.
Their mom, Traci Kurmay, who had also been a patient at Riley during high school, said her kids were always very excited to come to Dance Marathon.
“They wait and wait and wait for their dance party,” Kurmay said.
Freshman business major Alexa Cardelli said although she doesn’t know what to expect from her first Dance Marathon, she is excited to see how it goes. She got her donations mainly from family.
“My family was very supportive and willing to donate because they knew what the kids were going through,” Cardelli said.
Courtlynd Scott, a junior speech pathology major who also is on the Riley Relations committee, said she is most looking forward to seeing her Riley buddy and hanging out with him during the event.
“All of the kids I’ve met through doing DM have been such an inspiration and it makes me want to help them,” Scott said. “They’re the true heroes.”
