Ball State may have to make up snowdays

Ball State may be required to compensate for the two days lost to the snowstorm at the start of the semester, administrators said.

During the University Senate meeting Thursday, President Jo Ann Gora and Provost Terry King discussed the possibility of making up lost time.

“I don’t want to act paranoid here,” Gora said. “But I am expecting a request from Indiana Commission for Higher Education asking us how we made up the instruction. We have an obligation to our students. We don’t reduce their tuition costs, so we have an obligation to the instruction time.”

King said the University Senate passed a policy to align Ball State with the Higher Learning Commission and Department of Education standards, holding Ball State to a number of instructional days.

“The options are ranging from, for example, scheduling in a couple of Saturdays would certainly do it, if you take that approach,” King said. “Other mechanisms [include] going online.”

University Senate chairperson David Pearson said in most cases, only one day of instructional time was lost. Although students missed two days of class, they missed one day of Monday classes and one day of Tuesday classes.

“We need to keep that in mind when we look at options that are proposed to us,” he said. “I think the plan is to give some options.”

King said options or a decision will be released soon because some sections of classes only run for five weeks.
