A short-handed Ball State team closed out 2013 with a 68-73 loss to James Madison (5-9) in Harrisonburg, Va. The team dropped its seventh straight game and now holds a 2-8 record.

Head coach James Whitford said he wanted to see his senior Cardinals produce more heading into Monday’s action. That translated to Majok Majok, Jesse Berry and Chris Bond combining for 45 points on 53 percent of field goals and 24 rebounds.

Majok and Berry chipped in 18 a piece, but Majok added 14 rebounds to his point total. Freshman guard Zavier Turner finished with 10 points and a career-high six assists.

The Cardinals traveled without freshman guard Quinten Payne as he was out due to a foot injury. Senior guard Kindon Crowder traveled with the team but due to illness, he missed the game.

The Dukes’ length was difficult to manage for the smaller Ball State team. Every player for James Madison is taller than six feet with sophomore guard Ron Curry listed as the shortest player at 6-foot-4.

James Madison played a 3-2 zone that forced Ball State into 19 turnovers.

The Cardinals trimmed the Dukes’ lead to 59-60 with a Berry three-pointer at the 5:09 mark. On the ensuing possession, Curry made a layup and got fouled in the process. Ball State would not get any closer for the remainder of the game.

The Cardinals have a three-day break before bringing in 2014 with a home game against Oakland City on Jan. 3. The Cardinals have not played at home since a 50-69 loss to Valparaiso on Dec. 4.

Ball State begins conference play Jan. 8.
