WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State successful in day one of three of Wake Forest Invitational

The Daily News

The Ball State women’s tennis team was back in action Friday, as the squad began day one of three of the Wake Forest Invitational.

It was a relatively successful day for the team, as the women managed to pull out a 6-2 singles record, as well as posting a 1-3 mark in doubles play.

Upperclassmen Kristel Sanders and Ashlyn Rang were both able to advance to the second round with straight set wins, while sophomores Courtney Earnest and Bethany Moore also saw their solid play rewarded with trips to round two.

Freshmen Marin Kanii and Toni Ormond were also both able to handle their day one opponents and continue on. Junior Courtney Wild and freshman Erin Kanii were Ball State's only two participants who did not advance to the winner’s bracket in singles play.

The team was not as fortunate with their doubles matches, as they went 1-3, but it was not for lack of effort. Moore and Sanders lost their match by 1 point (8-7), Ormond and Earnest lost by three (8-5), while Kanii fell short by a score of 8-4.

The lone victory from doubles play came from the combination of Rang and Wild who advanced in the winner’s bracket by defeating their opponents by a final score of 8-3.

Day two of the Wake Forest Invitational continues through Sunday.
