Ball State women’s golf highlighted April on its calendar even before the season began in early September.
With three consecutive weekend events leading into the Mid-American Conference Championship on Friday, April 26, it is easy to see why.
The Cardinals finished second of 14 teams at the 2013 Eastern Kentucky Colonel Classic this weekend. The teams’ strong play pleased coach Katherine Mowat, who believes it was a good start to this all-important month of competition.
“We needed that to see that each player still believes in themselves,” Mowat said.
Despite some inconsistencies early this year, Mowat believes this team will be competitive through the end of the season.
Mowat described the three rounds as “solid play.” The 54-hole event left Ball State with a team total of 914 (304-305-305). Conference opponent Toledo finished first with a mark of 893.
Sophomore Jenna Hague posted her lowest three-day total as a Cardinal (219) on her way to claiming a first-place finish. Hague’s victory was her fifth of the season.
Senior Zoe Camus had a strong individual performance as well, finishing in a tie for eighth place. Camus posted a 228 (75-75-78).
The Cardinals had backslid in three events prior to this weekend’s. After taking sixth at the Jim West Challenge, the team notched a 10th, and then a 13th place finish last week.
Behind a career-day from Hague, the team was able to get back on the right track. Mowat believes that a clear day’s weather was an important factor as well.
The team will look to build on their solid play next weekend at the Indiana University Invitational.
