SWAT team involved in near-campus standoff

A SWAT callout in a student neighborhood startled nearby residents today, including a Ball State student who lives less than a block away.

“It was kind of nerve-wracking, waking up to that,” Kelsey Seger, a junior hospitality major, said.

“They were walking out of the house — probably about 20 of the police officers,” she said. “And there were about 20 or so more about a block down.”

The incident began near the corner of Main and Calvert streets around 9 a.m. The Star Press reported one man was arrested and that a brief standoff with police was related to an overnight break-in at the Muncie Liquors store in the 400 block of Tillotson Avenue.

Segar said she was on her way to school and walking past the house after police secured the area, when they directed her to take another route to campus.

“From what I heard, one of the guys [there] barricaded himself in the house,” she said.

The incident so close to her home left her, “concerned, scared [and] nervous,” Seger said.

“When there’s something like that outside your house,” she said, “You’re pretty concerned.”
