Early Monday morning, University Police Department officers were involved in a high-speed chase that ended due to safety concerns.
At approximately 1 a.m., a UPD officer stopped a vehicle in the area of Beechwood Avenue and Dicks Street. A passenger exited the vehicle when it was stopped. As another officer arrived on scene and approached the vehicle, the car fled the scene. Officers pursued, said Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for Marketing and Communications.
The officers pursued the car on Bethel Avenue and north on Tillotson Avenue. At this point, the chase was terminated because of excessive speed, Proudfoot said.
UPD reconnected with the vehicle at Morrison Road and McGalliard Road. The chase then went southbound on Nebo Road then west on River Road and stopped at River Road and Tiger Drive.
"In both cases, officers stopped chasing because of concerns for safety," Proudfoot said.
According to scanner traffic, the Muncie Police Department were also pursuing the vehicle and followed the vehicle as it approached Jackson Street and headed toward 850 West and McGalliard Road.
Officers believed the driver may have been headed toward I-69 North.
