Indiana priest reported missing in Greece

INDIANAPOLIS — A Roman Catholic priest from Indiana who has been studying in Greece has been missing since he told family members he feared for his life earlier this week.

The family of the Rev. Christiaan Kappes say they've been in contact with U.S. and Greek officials, but don't know what has happened to the 36-year-old priest attached to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland says Kappes visited the embassy in Athens Monday, but he didn't request safe haven. U.S. officials don't know where he went and haven't spoken to him since.

Kappes' sister tells The Indianapolis Star he told his family he and his female translator might be in danger from her relatives and he apparently never made it aboard a plane back to the United States.
