DeHority Complex wins McKinley Strip Picture Hunt second year in a row

With the Pride of Mid-America playing the school song, students run toward the entrance of the Homecoming Village with their flags and cameras - the final step in Monday's Tour of the McKinley Strip Picture Hunt.

For winning the Homecoming event, the team from DeHority Complex received front row seats to Air Jam on Thursday, a trophy and coupons for businesses around the Village.

Though some teams were upset about not beating DeHority Complex, which also won the competition last year, students crossing the finish line said they were looking forward to continuing the fun in the Homecoming Village.

"It's something students can get involved in," said Robert Saxon, residence hall chairman for the Homecoming Steering Committee. "It's a kick-start right before the Village, and it's a good way for students to have fun, be enthusiastic and get excited."

The hunt started at 6 p.m. on University Green, when teams gathered with hand-made flags and digital cameras. Teams were responsible for having the flag at all times, which were required to be smaller than a twin-sized sheet, and cost less than $20 to make.

Teams of 10 students or fewer represented residence halls as on the way to 20 locations on campus. Once at a location, the teams had to take a picture with its flag and half of the team in the shot.

"Not all the halls were represented this year," Saxon said. "But we did have a good majority from around campus - halls all the way from Elliott [Hall] to Schmidt/Wilson in Johnson B."

The hunt then took students all over campus and it ended at a tent at the corner of Riverside Avenue and Martin Street. The teams' cameras were then verified to have all 20 photos, and the teams received the placing in the final results.

Though the hunt was first introduced last year, this year's change made it seem like a new event, Saxon said.

"The picture hunt started out as just a scavenger hunt," Saxon said. "This year, we wanted to amp it up a little with the photo aspect. We want students excited for what's coming up with Homecoming."
