College Republicans host debate watch party

10/03/12 3:24 p.m.

Students wishing to catch tonight's presidential debate are invited to a watching party by the College Republicans.

Students of any political opinion are welcome, as the College Republicans hope to not make this a partisan event, but rather a place for students to watch the debate in good company.

"The debates are a good way for people to get away from the negative political environment," said Kelsea Neal, public relations chair for College Republicans. "It's a good way to get more information on the actual issues without the political atmosphere."

The viewing party was organized today so that State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Tony Benett, could remain on campus to watch the debate.

Benett will not be able to attend, though, because of a last-minute engagement with his campaign, Kayleigh Mohler, College Republicans president said.

Students are encouraged to show up to the televisions at the back of The Tally in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center at 8:45 p.m.

The University Democrats will not be holding a public watch party for Wednesday's debate.

The first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and presidential candidate Mitt Romney will begin at 9 p.m.
