Ball State Dance Marathon committee to host 5K run/walk

10/04/12 4:03 p.m.

In addition to dancing for 12 straight hours, Ball State's Dance Marathon committee has a new event on its agenda - a 5K run/walk.

This is the first year the committee will host the FT5K run/walk to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children.

The race begins at 9 a.m. Sunday starting at the Ball State Alumni Center. Early online registration is $25 and race day registration is $30 and beings at 8 a.m. Participants will race around campus and end back at the Alumni Center.

Ross Pierson, director of fundraising and a junior business administration major, said the idea of the FT5K had been tossed around for a while, but he wanted to make it a reality.

"I made it one of my goals to actually put it on this year instead of just talking about it," Pierson said.

The proceeds will go to the Magic Castle Cart at the hospital. This cart goes around to every room in the hospital, giving toys and games to children who are patients.

"The idea of the cart is to make them forget about what's going on and put a smile on their faces," Pierson said.

BSDM's goal is to raise about $1,500 to $2,000 and have at least 100 participants. As of Thursday, 95 people have registered.

BSUDM has promoted the event since the summer and this week at the scramble light.

"We are all excited, which I think makes other people excited as well," Alex Donaldson, director of media relations, said.

Donaldson, a junior public relations major, said the BSUDM team is eager to see the results from the event and continue to host the race every year.

"Hopefully in the future people will look forward to it just like they do our marathon and annual date auction," Donaldson said.
