WCRD, Dining to put on picnic on LaFollette field

09/20/12 12:11 a.m.

For the first time, Ball State dining will present a Family Weekend Picnic with WCRD.

The is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at LaFollette Field.

The picnic will provide entertainment and food and is sponsored by Pepsi and Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

"There will be a burger bar, kid's carnival, inflatables and more," Eric Needleman, sales manager for WCRD, said.

The picnic is one flat rate for each family member. The picnic will cost a meal swipe for Ball State students.

"We're hoping for a great turnout," said Suzanne Clem, a marketing coordinator at Ball State. "We tried to keep the price really reasonable at $5, so that it's an attractive event for entire families."

Elizabeth Poore, assistant director of operations, said campus dining has planned for 700 people to attend. Dining plans to entertain by using campus resources.

"To make the picnic a lively, fun atmosphere, we definitely wanted music for people to enjoy while they eat," Clem said. "We always enjoy partnering with student organizations, so WCRD was a natural choice, and we knew that they'd be great at finding music that will appeal to both parents and students."

The event will precede the Ball State's home game against South Florida. The picnic is an alternative way for families to tailgate.

"[My family] is all passionate about sports, so it is a good time to hangout with each other while watching what we love," sophomore Elena Sullivan said.

For many students, college is their first time away from home. This weekend will be an opportunity to see family for the first time since move-in day in August.

"I love Family Weekend because my hometown is about five hours away from Ball State, and this is the first time since the school year began that I get to see anyone from back home," Sullivan said.

Ball State has multiple planned events for this weekend that are all family oriented.

"Sometimes, it may be really difficult to stay at school when homesickness settles in, but having your parents come for Family Weekend always helps," Sullivan said. "It gives you just the right amount of time to see the ones you love from home, which makes you appreciate them more. I would recommend Family Weekend to every single student. It is an incredible experience."

In case of rain, the picnic will take place in America's Buffet in LaFollette Complex.
