Tasty, simple ideas for cooking at a tailgate

Tailgating usually consists of favorite sports team attire, friends and some food on the grill. But there are numerous ways to spice up your tailgating food for the football season.

I recommend not wasting all your time at the grill and missing out on the tailgate. Do this by cooking some of the more difficult foods beforehand.

If you like hot dogs, you may want to try a beer brat. Grill the brat in advance and freeze it. On game day, bring beer, onions, garlic and a little butter to boil in a pot on the grill.

Chicken seems to be a less popular item but still is tasty. Before the game, marinate some chicken breasts in barbecue sauce or different marinades. Toss it on the grill early during the tailgate party.

One of my favorite dishes for the grill is sweet and spicy bacon chicken. To begin, halfway cook the bacon in the oven. Season some sliced chicken breasts with salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili powder. Wrap the bacon around the chicken slices and roll it in brown sugar. Then put the chicken in your cooler and grill it at your tailgate. It's the perfect mix of sweet and spicy.

Football season can get a little cold sometimes. On those cold days, there is nothing better than a good pot of chili. Just make a pot at home and take it to the tailgate.

If you're a beginner at tailgating, keep it simple. Take smaller quantities of food, and pack only what you will use.

If the main dish is hamburgers and hot dogs, you will want your meat fresh. Keep the meat in the cooler until grill time, and only put amounts that fit on the grill at one time.

Potato salad, pasta salad and coleslaw are great side dishes for a day of grilling. In order for these dishes to stay delicious, the food needs to be cold. Make sure to pack your cooler full of ice on game day.

Also tailgating isn't the same without chips and dip, so make sure to bring your favorites to the party.

When cooking food outside, keep food safety in mind. Game day won't be fun if your food tastes awful and makes you sick. Make sure to keep all the uncooked meat away from the cooked food and bring a food thermometer along. With all the chaos going on at the tailgate, it can be hard to keep track of how long the meat has been on the grill. A thermometer is easy to use, and you will be able to tell when the meat is completely done cooking.

If you're 21 and older, don't be afraid to mix up your game day beverage. Beer isn't the only thing that has to be consumed at the tailgate; you can try an occasional cocktail.

Don't forget to top your meal off with some great desserts.

So now when it comes to game day, you have some easy and tasty recipes to try, and there's no better time to try this than at the Ball State football game Saturday.
