Ball State students and Muncie community members from various political backgrounds gathered to hear Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock speak at the Ball State College Republicans meeting that was held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Mourdock will be competing for the senate seat against Democrat Joe Donnelly.

During Mourdock's speech he focused on his plan to improve the economy and helping America move forward in a positive way, by challenging the Obama-Donnelley way of politics.

"In Indiana our way to improve the economy is to pay off debt and mortgage, now we have a triple credit rating which is higher than the United States of America," Mourdock said.

The crowd of listeners gained more knowledge toward Mourdock's politics and improvements on health care and paying off debt.

Kayleigh Mohler, the chairman of the College Republicans, said it was great to have Mourdock come to campus for another year and to form a connection with students.

"Since a lot of us haven't had a chance to vote in the presidential election he brought awareness to students to learn more about politics and to get out there and vote," Mohler said.

Mourdock also spoke about the national debt four years ago increasing from 10 trillion dollars to now 16 trillion dollars this week.

"The unemployment rate has now been above eight percent for 42 straight months, the longest period, even longer than the Great Depression," Mourdock said.

A big issue for many of the audience members was his plan for health care and whether or not it will help the American people.

Mohler said that Obama's health care plan is a great idea for everyone to have health insurance.

"But I believe that by having a free market will allow it to be more cost efficient for everyone," Mohler said. "If you have one provider, which is the government, it is going to limit everything."

Mourdock also addressed that he will bring a needed understanding of free enterprise and sound fiscal policies to the Senate.

"I liked his discussion on fiscal matters, [and] I know he is going to be a good physical hawk when he gets to the senate," Stuart Kennan, audience member, said. "I appreciate that because I think that our spending is getting out of control. "

Mourdock addressed the issues that many voters wanted to hear.

"I thought he was a great speaker, [and] it is nice to hear candidates speak at Ball State that actually care about our votes," Keenan said.

For Kelsea Neal, public relations chair, she said it was a great opportunity to have a nice bipartisan discussion.

"The youth vote is often overlooked," Neal said. "Mourdock's position on energy was very awesome, it is really important for the future of America and our energy policies, which has a lot of potential."

Mourdock encouraged students to keep learning, and to never let themselves be limited by their educational background.
