LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Messer's idea of government doesn't work

In the recent Ball State Daily News article, the GOP candidate for Congress from the 6th District, Luke Messer, at his visit to campus is quoted as stating, "We have shown Indiana a model of conservative government that works." I worry that how Mr. Messer is defining "works" is a far cry from any such thing. Of the 19 counties in the 6th District the U.S. Census Bureau reports that between 1999 and 2009 the number of people in the District below the poverty line has increased as follows in the following counties: Bartholomew 41.0%, Dearborn 46.0%, Decatur 46.2%, Delaware 69.9%, Fayette 83.0%, Franklin 47.4%, Hancock 84.5%, Henry 66.2%, Jefferson 42.9%, Jennings 86.5%, Ohio 65.8%, Randolph 59.0%, Ripley 77.2% Rush 63.8%, Scott, 46.0%, Shelby 85.5%, Switzerland 73.1%, Union 66.0%, and Wayne 77.2%. Now, add the last three years of economic free-fall to those figures and you see what Luke Messer defines as government that works. Would you buy a used car from this guy if this is what he means by it "works"? If this is how conservative government works in Indiana, how can we send this model to Washington D.C.?
