FOOTBALL: Ball State takes early lead over Indiana

Wenning throws two touchdown passes, Ball State leads 14-10

It didn't take very long for Indiana to make its first explosive play of the game against Ball State.

The Hoosiers nearly scored on its first play of the game as quarterback Cameron Coffman connected to wide receiver Cody Latimer on a screen pass that went for 36-yards. Latimer would have broken the run for a touchdown but was tripped up by the final defender down the left sideline.

After the play, Ball State's defense settled down and held Indiana to a 46-yard field goal.

Ball State got excellent field position on its first drive thanks to a personal foul penalty. The Cardinals started at their own 42-yard line, but couldn't do anything with the field position as the offense was forced into a three-and-out as barely a minute went off the clock.

The second drive fared better for the visitors as Ball State was able to drive from its own 42-yard line again. After a couple of nice runs by running back Jahwan Edwards and wide receiver Jamill Smith, quarterback Keith Wenning threw a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zane Fakes. After the PAT, Ball State took a 7-3 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter.

Indiana coach Kevin Wilson called for his offense to go for it on a fourth-and-one try at his own 45-yard line. Indiana couldn't convert it and Ball State turned the turnover into seven more points when Wenning threw his second touchdown of the quarter, this one to wide receiver Willie Snead from 34-yards out.

The running game for the Hoosiers quickly responded as running back Stephen Houston had a couple big runs, including a 12-yard touchdown run to cut the Cardinals lead to 14-10 late in the first quarter.
