BARTENDER CONNECTIONS: Student juggles work, internship and bartending

Connections do pay off, and the bartender at The Silo and Cleo's experienced it first hand.

A senior in advertising and sociology, Stephanie Alles said she met a variety of people while at work.

"If I didn't have my Silo job, I wouldn't have gotten my current internship," Alles said.

The Silo happens to be a client of local radio station, WLBC-FM, and the account executive stopped by for lunch. Alles learned the executive was in a similar field as her.

"I love my internship right now," she said. "I was just talking to one of my customers, and it totally worked out."

Alles's shift varies from day to evening, but lunch is quieter and more laid-back than nights. Therefore, she has more opportunities to talk with people like her current boss at WLBC-FM.

Katie Cannon, manager at The Silo and Cleo's, said Alles always tends to her customers and is very personable.

"She has great customer service and attitude," Cannon said. "She's learning more about her job and getting more involved. She's doing really well."

Cannon said Alles receives lots of flattery from customers.

"Stephanie always looks nice, and she always gets compliments on her looks and charm," she said.

One of the reasons Alles said she enjoys working as a bartender is that she can dress as she wants.

"It's really nice to have a job where I can dress nice in my own clothes and go to work," she said. "I can even have my nail polish on."

On Sunday nights, Alles has to take her nail polish off to work at the Atrium at Ball State.

But as a senior, Alles said this semester has been rough on her.

"I'm taking four classes, and they're all upper-level and really involved," she said. "I'm interning at WLBC and putting 20 hours there. I bartend at The Silo and Cleo's. One night, I went to bed at 5:30 a.m. and I had to be at my internship at 11 a.m."

When making drinks, Alles recommends girls her favorite one, a Blue Hawaiian.

"It's a mix of Malibu, pineapple juice and blue Curacao," she said. "Someone asked me to make it, but I didn't know what it was. It's my favorite drink I've learned."

Alles said some nights are pretty quiet, especially without a DJ. But when there is music blaring, Alles moves and dances behind the bar and serve customers as the "shot girl."

In addition to finding her internship through connections, Alles found her bartending job through networking.

"I met Chris [Ellison] at Center Stage, who is the owner of Cleo's and The Silo," Alles said. "It came in handy that we knew someone."

Working, interning and classes has been keeping Alles extremely occupied, but she said she enjoys being busy.

"I've learned a lot of new things," she said. "It's a work in progress."
