Obama issues flag lowering proclamation in honor of Armstrong

Following the death of astronaut Neil Armstrong, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation Monday asking all public buildings, military posts and naval vessels to lower flags after the death of the first man to walk on the moon.

The flags will be lowered Friday as a salute to Armstrong, a Midwest native.

Ball State announced it would lower campus flags as well.

Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon on July 29, 1969, as a part of the Apollo 11 mission.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University and later went on to teach at the University of Cincinnati. He also held numerous honorary degrees from multiple universities.

Armstrong died Saturday as a result of "complications following cardiovascular procedures." He was 82.
