KAMERA OBSCURA: Fall movie preview

"The Master" (September 21st)

In director P.T. Anderson's newest film, a psychiatrist (Philip Seymour Hoffman) tries to help a man (Joaquin Phoenix) escape from a mental disease that plagues him.

Chirpmeter (5/5)- This is P.T. Anderson's first film since "There Will be Blood," easily one of the best films of the past decade. Anderson is consistently one of the most interesting filmmakers around. Throw in the very talented Phoenix's return to acting after a bizarre rap career interlude and you have one of the more intriguing movies to come out this year.

"Looper" (September 28th)

This time-traveling, sci-fi romp stars Joseph Gordon Levitt as an assassin who kills men that mobsters send back from the future. This is all well and good until the mobsters send - wait for it - himself to be killed. Levitt's future self is played by Bruce Willis - the makeup team had to actually work overtime because neither of the actors really look alike.

Chirpmeter (3/5)- This could be a really interesting movie, but it looks like just another sci-fi thriller. There's nothing wrong with that, but the genre is too crowded to get excited about it anymore.

October

"Taken 2" (October 5th)

A follow-up to the 2008 hit "Taken" the sequel will once again involve Bryan Mills' (Liam Neeson) family being, well, taken. This film will see Mills move a little farther up the ladder of the mob he dealt with in the first movie and may involve more globe-trotting antics.

Chirpmeter (1/5)- Do we really need another "Taken?" I mean the formula did work the first time, with the movie being a mindless action thriller, but the general rule of thumb is these franchises get progressively sillier as they go along and "Taken 2" seems to be no exception. If you're looking to escape for a few hours you may enjoy this, but otherwise it looks passable.

"Sinister" (October 5th)

In this horror film, a novelist (Ethan Hawke) moves his family into a new home. While there, he discovers a box of tapes that reveal the horrible fate of the families that lived there before.

Chirpmeter (4.5/5)- I really like scary movies and this seems like one of the scariest movies I have seen in awhile. Hawke has always been a legitimate leading man, so in terms of horror films, I am excited for this. It may not be the greatest of pure films, but it should be a great October ride.

"Paranormal Activity 4" (October 19th)

In this fourth film of the "Paranormal" franchise , well, there actually hasn't been an official synopsis released yet. The only clue we have is that Katie Featherson (of the first film) is in it. If you look online, however, you'll find plenty of hintsas to what the next film will be.

Chirpmeter(3/5)- I've enjoyed the "Paranormal" films, but the series is running out of steam. The last installment wasn't great, but maybe this one will be an improvement. This also will be the last film of the franchise, so let's hope it wraps things up well.

November

"Wreck-It-Ralph" (November 2nd)

Combining popular video game characters, this tells the story of Ralph (John C. Reilly), a villain who wants to escape his game.

Chirpmeter (4/5)- Similar to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," this movie blends a lot of popular characters into one film. It looks like it will be a lot of fun if the plot can come through as well as the characters.

"Skyfall" (November 9th)

The next volume in the James Bond series with Daniel Craig as agent 007.

Chirpmeter (5/5)- The trailers to this movie look ridiculously cool and Craig has provedhimself as, possibly, the best Bond ever. If not, he's certainly the most badass. "Skyfall" looks like the best Craig-led Bond thus far and that certainly means a lot.

"Lincoln" (November 9th)

In this Stephen Spielberg directed biopic, Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the sixteenth president of the United States.

Chirpmeter (4/5)- Day-Lewis will be great as Lincoln, but I have some reservations as to what Spielberg will do with Lincoln. This is sure to be an Oscar contender with the talent involved.

"Rise of the Guardians" (November 21st)

This film reimagines the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny and Jack Frost as protectors of children and tells the story of them facing their biggest threat - The Nightmare King.

Chirpmeter (4/5)-The first trailer for this movie looked great, but the second wasn't quite as good. It still promises a lot of imagination and innovation with thevision of the characters.
