Bright lights on a hot night

Despite the heat, Muncie residents celebrated July 4 by the hundreds

Hundreds filled the Minnetrista lawn Wednesday night, coolers, lawn chairs and mosquito repellent in hand. In the background, patriotic music could be heard throughout the grounds, courtesy of America's Hometown Band. The sweltering temperature and humidity didn't stop the crowd.

Muncie resident Darlene Moorehead is no newcomer to Muncie's annual fireworks show, having lived in the city for the last 40 years. For this year, she brought her grandchildren along to share in the experience.

"We like the music and the fireworks, and it's just wonderful," Moorehead said.

Although the Fourth of July isn't always a big family event for the Mooreheads, this year they had their four grandchildren and daughter in tow.

"When the kids were younger, we always came," she said. "Ever since they started doing it at Minnetrista, we've come. I think it's a great area to do it and I think people like coming out to where there are things to do and it's safe."

As the band began playing the theme songs of each military branch, veterans across Minnetrista's east lawn stood to be recognized for their service.

"It's always impressive. I get kind of ...," Moorehead said with a smile. "I enjoy this."

Although the heat played a major factor in her family's decision, Moorehead said seeing so many people out and about didn't make her regret the choice.

"It's the spirit of it," she said.

Anastasia Norris of Muncie attended the festivities for the second year in a row, and saw the evening as a great opportunity to do something fun with her family.

"It's great to do something so traditional and with good values," Norris said.
