The Muncie Symphony Orchestra will be playing the Festival On The Green Saturday on the Ball State Arts Terrace where the theme for the evening is music from the movies. The event is presented by the Muncie Arts and Cultural Council and will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an arts fair followed by the MSO concert at 7 p.m.
MSO executive director Alena McKenzie said there will be plenty of events going on this year including a picnic decoration contest, a jewelry exhibit, a second stage for various artists to perform and the actual concert itself.
"From 5:30 p.m., there will be over 20 booths available by local artists, arts organizations that will be having information about their programs," she said. "If you can recall Symphony on the Green, which was completely produced from beginning to end by Muncie Symphony Orchestra, and in the last few years it has expanded to festivals on the green involving a lot more cultural and other organizations."
The festival will have a different set up this year as the MSO will be placed in front of the steps of the art museum.
"There used to be a main stage right on where the art museum steps are and that's where Muncie Symphony Orchestra will be performing this year," she said. "The whole arts fair will be in the same area but more to the right of the museum, kind of closer to the North Quad building."
On top of the events taking place at the festivals, participants will get the chance to win door prizes with no additional cost.
"We are giving away door prizes, so each of them are provided certain prizes of certain value which will be given away sometime between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in groups," she said. "At one of the information booths they will have to leave their name or contact information in case they decide to not stay very long and leave and go home they still can win prizes and they'll be contacted to get their prize."
If you're planning on going and having a picnic of your own, you may want to dress it up to reflect your favorite movie theme.
"They will be doing a picnic contest that Muncie Symphony is hosting this year; it's also going to be between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Anybody who comes in and decided to participate, they just have to register their picnic," she said. "The volunteers that are working, they will give out helium balloons with a number so that each picnic participant can mark their picnic spot for our judges to walk around judge and also for the public to participate."
The most anticipated part of the festival and every year's grand finale is the MSO's performance that will take place at 7 p.m. this year.
"The theme for the entire festival this year is movies and since Muncie Symphony is hosting the picnic, that's where it'll come from because they're playing the program from the movies," she said. "We're playing 'Mary Poppins,' 'Cinderella,' tunes from 'Aladdin,' 'Harry Potter' - a bunch of movies; they will be very familiar tunes."
The Festival on the Green is a free, family-friendly event that students, faculty or Muncie residents are encouraged to attend. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Alumni Center.
