Ever wanted to make a "hillbilly wine glass?" At Minnetrista's Raise Your Glass, you can. Raise Your Glass is part of After 5, a series of programs that started in 2008 designed to attract adults 21 and older in an attempt to create a more attractive museum experience. Stephanie Dilk, education manager at Minnetrista, sat down with the Daily News for a question and answer session about the event.
Daily News: How did the idea of Raise Your Glass come to be?
Stephanie Dilk: We currently have an excellent glass exhibit here, and that was the inspiration for this event. We wanted to combine the idea of art and glass but to also make it fun and interesting and new again. And so we've done that by opening up the exhibit and also allowing guests to create hillbilly wine glasses.
DN: What exactly are hillbilly wine glasses?
SD: They're actually really popular right now. It's the art of taking two objects, one of which being the Ball jar, which goes back to our own heritage of Minnetrista and the Ball Brothers, and then putting the two objects together and creating something you can take home with you. It really combines our sense of humor with our heritage, and allows you to do something fun and interesting.
DN: We hear you're teaming up with Cleo's Bourbon Bar for a bourbon tasting as well.
SD: Yup. They're providing the education that goes along with the bourbon tasting on Friday. So, it's not just going to be "Here, try some bourbon," but we're going to be showing that there is an actual art to bourbon.
DN: How did you come across the band Married Folk, who will be playing at Raise Your Glass?
SD: I actually stumbled upon them by accident. We try really hard to use local music resources in our events as a chance to showcase local talent, and Married Folk was really just a contact of a contact of a contact. What's funny is that the two people in the band are actually parents of a child that we've had in our summer camp.
DN: Why should patrons come to this event?
SD: I think the thing that is most appealing about After 5 is how cost-effective it is. It's not necessarily designed to be your Friday night, but rather a way to kick off your Friday night. That 5:30-7:30 p.m. time frame is your time to unwind and relax, and this event allows you to do just that.
