UPB to host battle of the bands

Ball State students will have a chance to support the local music scene on campus Tuesday night.

University Program Board is sponsoring the second annual Battle of the Bands competition in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom with the first band starting at 6:45 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free for students and $1 for guests, and giveaways will be handed out to the first 100 students in attendance.

Program director, senior Hospitality major Megan Rogers, said it's a friendly musical event for students to attend.

Nine acts will comprise the event and a headlining band will perform an hour long set to round out the night.

Rogers said students have a chance to vote on which bands they think are worthy of performing at the Late Nite Carnival on April 20.

The line-up will include Adam Christopher, Can I Get One, Chris Mack, The Ostler, Mai Nguyen, Apathy Wizards, Angelo Van Terra, Neon and SaintLewis. The headlining band will be Late Night Reading, a local pop-punk band.

Rogers said her hope for this year's battle is for more people to come out, dance and get involved.

"It's a good opportunity for students to give their input on music in Muncie," Rogers said.

Freshman communications major Chris Mack will be rapping at the event.

Mack said he has been rapping for eight to nine years and was inspired by his father, but he said his rapping technique is unique from current rappers.

"I'm a cautious rapper," Mack said. "I put ministry before my music."

Mack said he wants people to come out to support not just his act but the rest of the performers as well.

"This is important to the Ball State community because the support comes from the people and without that we can't get far," he said.

Mack said he will be performing mash-ups of his work and his single "Starry Eyed."
