Moira Forbes speaks in Pruis Hall

Persistence and perseverance were hot topics on Wednesday afternoon in Pruis Hall.

Moira Forbes, president and publisher of ForbesWoman, spoke about the effectiveness of personal branding, the fear of failure and how to overcome that fear by exerting perseverance.

Junior magazine journalism major Taylor Ellis asked Forbes for advice about her recent letdown when trying to get an internship for a magazine in New York City.

Ellis said the advice Forbes gave her left her with a sense of confidence.

"Nine times out of 10, you're going to be told no," Ellis said. "But if you're aggressive enough, you'll get that one yes."

Forbes also highlighted the critical role of the media in our generation.

"[Journalism majors] are lucky to be in a field that is navigating through change," Forbes said. "You have the resources to be a change agent."

Forbes spoke about her constant fear of failure while growing up and how her fear has led her to the success she has now.

"You will be as successful as you want to be if you're passionate about something," Forbes said.

When one student brought up the evolution of the media, Forbes said this is a precious time to get involved.

"It's scary because it's the most tumultuous time, but just because something is not the same doesn't mean it's not worth doing," Forbes said. "In fact, when something is changing is the best time to do something."

Forbes said the first step in being successful is to fail first.

"You have to work to find it," Forbes said. "Great leadership qualities are things that don't change with time."

Ellis, who will be stepping into her senior year next semester, said after hearing Forbes speak about her experiences, she will no longer be afraid to fail.

"In the future if I'm told no, then I'm going to continue until I am told yes," Ellis said. "Then I can walk away knowing that I did not stop at no."
