This past weekend, a number of strong tornadoes struck the nation's midsection. These storms led to deaths, injuries and damage in areas like Creston, Iowa and Wichita, Kan.
For meteorologists, weather like this gives a chance to go out and see how storms form. Chasing storms takes training and practice to avoid getting hurt.
The Ball State Storm Chase Team chases storms in and around Indiana. It teaches and practices safe spotting techniques to avoid bad situations.
When chasing, there are certain rules that must be followed -¡- including avoiding highly-populated areas and never chasing at night. Violating these rules can lead to injury and even death.
This past weekend, some Ball State meteorology students drove to the Great Plains to chase, where they encountered the wrath of these storms head-on. The Ball State Storm Chase Team was not chasing this past weekend.
Being meteorologists ourselves, we understand the passion behind storm chasing. We know the exhilaration when seeing Mother Nature at her most intense. We also know that sometimes the passion for storms and the yearning for that exhilaration can cloud our judgment when chasing. We are very glad our good friends were not injured this past weekend and wish them many safe chases in the future.
