Late Nite Carnival set for Friday night

This year's Late Nite Carnival will feature roaming entertainment including jugglers and contortionists, the event organizer said.

There will also be fire performers, but they'll be housed in a tent.

"Obviously, we don't want fire roaming around," Kelsey McPheeters, Late Nite's administration coordinator, said.

The eighth annual Late Nite Carnival will take place from 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. in the C-1 commuter parking lot, on the north side of campus.

If rain interrupts the carnival, it will be postponed until Saturday. McPheeters said her committee will make the announcement by 2 p.m. Friday through its Facebook and Twitter accounts, LateNite at Ball State and @LateNiteBSU.

There will be 16 rides, including a Ferris wheel, a scrambler, bumper cars and a giant slide. Ten carnival games will be located around the parking lot, such as a dunk tank and a ring toss.

It might not compare to Indiana University's Little 500 race and week of events, but students are still looking forward to the carnival. Sophomore telecommunications major Alyssa Gorman said this will be her first time attending.

"I expect the carnival will be a lot of fun," she said. "I expect it to be a relaxing event before the week of finals begins."

A main stage and a side stage will be set up for entertainment throughout the night. On the main stage, John Cassidy will perform at 8 p.m., The Well Reds at 9:30 p.m. and Loose Screws at 11:30 p.m. The side stage performance list includes The LoudPack Show at 7 p.m.,Audiodacity at 10:30 p.m., Neon at 12:30 a.m. and DJ D-Lewsional at 1 a.m.

Cassidy is a magician, and according to his website, he has performed on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "Live with Regis and Kelly" and other shows. He has performed at the White House twice and is featured in "The Guinness Book of World Records" as the fastest balloon sculptor in the world, the site says.

Pepsi, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones are free, but attendees should bring cash with them to the carnival. Elephant ears, lemon shake-ups, fried Twinkies, Papa John's, ice cream and more will be available, but it must be purchased.

"We wanted to give students the opportunity to purchase carnival food, such as Baskin-Robbins' ice cream and other things that you would find at carnivals," McPheeters said. "But those vendors obviously need to pay for what they're giving us, so we just cap it at $4-5."

Students can enter the carnival beginning at 7 p.m., but those who are pre-registered can enter at 6 p.m. Those who want to enter early can register today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Scramble Light and from noon to 2 p.m. in the Atrium. On Friday, students can sign up early from noon until 3 p.m. at the Tally in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

After registering, students will receive a wristband, which then must be worn to enter at 6 p.m. You must be a Ball State student to register early; visitors can purchase $5 tickets to enter at the normal time.

McPheeters said students should attend because of the opportunities to meet people and the many activities taking place.

"It's the biggest event on campus, attendance-wise," she said. "You're not going to find anything like this for free once you graduate."
