Dumpster fire sparks behind Ball Communications

University Police responded to a dumpster fire on the west side of the Ball Communication Building around 2:45 p.m. on Thursday. Within minutes, police had extinguished the fire.

Rick Corcoran, a senior broadcast engineer for the University Teleplex, said he stepped outside when he noticed smoke billowing from the dumpster. The smoke seemed moderate initially but after a short amount of time, it grew more intense until flames became visible above the rim of the dumpster, Corcoran said.

After arriving at the scene, officers used a fire extinguisher from inside the building to smother the flames, he said.

Corcoran said he does not know if people smoke in the area frequently, but it is possible someone smoking may have started the fire.

"Probably somebody might have flipped a cigarette in there," he said.

Though not a designated smoking zone, cigarette butts litter the grass nearby, and an empty pack of Camel cigarettes lay among the scorched boxes inside the dumpster.

A policeman at the scene said he could not officially determine the fire's cause. The fire did not cause any property damage or human injury.
