Honors College offers prize for thesis projects

Students needing financial assistance for their senior thesis project have the chance to win a cash prize of $1,000.

The donation was made by long time Honors College faculty member Joe Trimmer and his wife Carol, both still involved with the university.

Students were nominated based on good standing in the Honors College by a faculty member.

James Ruebel, dean of the Honors College, said all students are eligible to have their thesis nominated for the prize and campus involvement does not give the student a leg up in the selection process.

"The prize is awarded solely on the basis of the quality of the thesis," Ruebel said.

Amy Thomas, vice president for Fund Stewardship at the Ball State Foundation, said the staff is looking for outstanding projects to fund.

"[Students] define how they want their gifts to be used and then we distribute based on that," Thomas said.

The Trimmer Prize was first awarded in 2008 to a senior Honors College student who wanted to take it a step further in the research thesis required for graduation.

The applications are currently being processed with a committee in the Honors College and winners will be announced April 16.
