Cinderella's Closet to sell cheap prom dresses

Ball State's Fashion Merchandising Association is helping make high school girls' prom dreams affordable.

The annual event, Cinderella's Closet, will be at 10 a.m.-5 p.m. today in the Alumni Center. Junior fashion merchandising major Katie Hargis has been working on Cinderella's Closet for three years. She is the co-president of the FMA and she said dresses are collected as donations and will be selling in the price range from $1-30.

"It's almost like a little store," Hargis said. "We set [dresses] up on different hangers by price range and people can come in and look at what they want, and they can try them on too."

The dresses donated come in variety of sizes, colors and styles. A concern is that some of the dresses may be outdated, but Hargis explains that every dress can be useful to someone.

"We get a lot of [outdated dresses] too, but a lot of people come in and just buy it for the material," Hargis said.

Any dress that is not selected on the single day event will be kept and used in next year's sale.

Tiffany Creal, junior apparel design and political science major also helps with the event. She is the other co-president of the association and she said that students can help with the event in other ways than by simply donating dresses.
