When I came to England, I was 20. In America, I was obviously not legal to drink. Here on the other hand, was a different story. My flatmates are all younger than me and I remember in the beginning being baffled by the fact that they had been legal to drink for about two years and I still wasn't legal back in the states. It threw me for a loop at first because in my head I thought everyone I meet must be over 21 but most of the people I have met here have been 18-21.
One of the interesting things I experienced here was ‘freshers week.' Although I'm not a fresher and am in my third year of college, all my flatmates are and others that I know. For one of the first weeks I was here before classes began, we had a pub crawl night. I was with some other American girls I had met and older students walked the freshers from bar to bar for the evening.
Now I wonder what is going through your head right now. I was completely shocked at this pub crawl! You certainly wouldn't see that at Ball State of upperclassmen taking the freshmen down to Dill Street and Savages.
Since I have your attention, another way that my university here is different from Ball State is the Student Union. I absolutely love the Ball State Student Center. It's a wonderful building with plenty of study space, great food choices and an overall nice atmosphere. The SU here is a bit different.
Probably the most obvious difference is the fact that there are two bars inside. Yes, you read correctly, there are two bars inside my British student union. Needless to say, the first time I went in, I was taken aback. I was used to seeing big comfy chairs and Taco Bell and Starbucks not two bars and dance floors.
