DIY FOR RDC (Real Damn Cheap): At-home facial ideas

Until last Monday, I was unemployed. And when you live off campus like I do, not having a job means no cash for gas and Woodworth lunches between classes. I also lacked the funds for beauty products that are necessary to brighten up my dull skin during the winter months.

So what are you to do when you have nothing to spare and your dry skin needs a quick fix? Here are two easy, DIY facial remedies that are totally winter-proof.

Brown Sugar Scrub from lovelyish.com

Since skin can be prone to dryness during winter, it's important to make an exfoliating scrub a personal staple to avoid flakiness. This homemade scrub is gentle and uses three effective ingredients: Olive oil to soften the skin, brown sugar for gentle exfoliation and honey for a soothing effect.

What you need*:

3 tablespoons warm extra virgin olive oil (Remember: Warm, not hot. Mix well to avoid spots that could burn)

3 tablespoons brown sugar

Tablespoon honey (You will add more to your scrub; a tablespoon is what to start out with)

*These are suggested amounts. You may adjust the amount of each ingredient until you reach a desired texture.

What to do:

1. Mix olive oil and brown sugar together.

2. Stir in honey, adding more until mixture becomes gooey.

3. Apply mixture to a clean, damp face and gently scrub for 1-2 minutes.

4. Rinse with warm water, and follow up with a moisturizer.

What I thought:

I replaced my regular St. Ives scrub with this remedy and used it last Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It worked just as well and caused my skin to be far more moisturized. However, the scrub was quite messy and required adding water to my hands to make it more workable. After rinsing thoroughly, my face was instantly smooth and had a nice glow to it.

Oatmeal mask from drgranny.com

Sometimes, achieving good skin only requires one main ingredient. Oatmeal is a great skin solution because it's completely natural, thoroughly cleanses the pores and doesn't contain random chemicals found in many facial products. It also evens out the complexion and gives skin a healthy glow.

What you need:

5-6 tablespoons oatmeal (I used Quaker Oats)

3 tablespoons water (can be adjusted to preference)

What to do:

1. Put oatmeal in a bowl. Add water to make a thick and smooth paste.

2. Spread mixture on a damp face evenly and let dry.

3. Rinse with warm water.

What I thought:

I used this mixture right before bed last Tuesday and Thursday and even though the oatmeal felt a little different than a typical mask, it was more effective than any mask I had ever used. Most masks I try immediately dry out my skin, but this one didn't. In fact, my skin felt perfectly moisturized.
