Bro. Stephen stops by Village Green Records on tour

XRA Record bands Metavari and State Park join label mate on the bill

Taking a hiatus from world travel to tour in support of his debut album release, Scott Fitzpatrick will stop by Muncie to share some of his natural, intimate music.

On the heels of a recent album release, Fitzpatrick's Bro. Stephen project will be playing on Saturday at Village Green Records, along with State Park and Metavari.

On Jan. 24, Crossroads of America Records released Bro. Stephen's debut album, "Baptist Girls," a record that had been in the works since 2009. According to a press release from XRA Records, Fitzpatrick is "another in the world's long list of unsettled souls."

Much like the "converted chicken coup" in which it was recorded, the album is natural and minimal, Fitzpatrick said.

"We wanted the songs to feel natural like they would when I play them live, while simultaneously being textured in the most appropriate ways we could think," he said.

The end result: an album that Fitzpatrick is "really, really proud of."

His show at VGR will be one of many shows on a five-week tour of the East Coast and Midwest, which will eventually lead Fiztpatrick to SXSW, a music, film and interactive conference in Austin, Texas, next month.

After hearing of husband&wife through a friend in 2005 or 2006, Fitzpatrick looked them up on MySpace, eventually bringing them to Louisville, Ky., where he was living at the time. After the show, Fitzpatrick connected with the husband&wife members over pizza, eventually playing bass for them for a while. Through this friendship, Fitzpatrick connected with XRA Records, which was started by a few of the husband&wife members.

"We just stayed in touch, and eventually they all became some of the most important people in my life and are the greatest support group I could ask for," he said.

Fitzpatrick is familiar with Muncie, as well as VGR. He was a friend of the original owner of the record store, Jared Cheek. He is also familiar with both of the other bands on the bill.

"Oh man, I really love both of them," he said. "I've been a fan of Metavari for quite a while now, and they are such great friends of mine. The music they make is amazing and I'm really excited for their new material. I've only seen State Park a few times, but I've been really impressed with Derek's songwriting. He writes really cool, angular songs that I am definitely way into."

Metavari's set will differ from those past, Travis Harvey, owner of VGR, said.

"Metavari will be doing a special soundscape DJ performance here," he said. "It will be weird and different — nothing less than I expect from the Metavari guys just north of us from Fort Wayne."

As for XRA Records, Harvey said he believes the label deserves recognition.

"XRA does something really special for Indiana," Harvey said. "Sure, they're an independent record label. Most would assume an amateur endeavor, poorly run business, low quality recordings.

"But on the other hand, XRA runs a label that is more professional than nearly any other major [label]. Not to mention, they give more artistic license to their artists as well."
