This week is Cultural Week, and Ball State dining, the Rinker Center for International Programs and the Multicultural Center are coming together to educate students about other cultures.
Cultural Week is a nation-wide event many schools will recognize next week. Ball State chose to hold Cultural Week this week because it felt students would be too busy before Thanksgiving Break, said Patricia Lovett, director of the Multicultural Center.
Tomorrow will be the second annual Amazing Taste, which will feature food from more than 20 countries and cultural displays from student groups. Lovett said although every event is equally important to Cultural Week, she thinks the Amazing Taste will have the most student participation.
"It's probably going to be the one that has the most draw for students," she said.
This year's Amazing Taste will be much different from last year's. Lovett said the Multicultural Center listened to student feedback to make the event more organized.
The first difference will be location. Last year, the Amazing Taste was held in the area between Woodworth and DeHority Complexes. This year, it will be held in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.
Ball State dining also shut down some of the dining halls last year in order to increase attendance, but this year the only dining hall to be closed is the Tally in the Student Center.
Lovett said many students complained about lines, so in response, the cutoff will be 1,500 students. Last year, the Amazing Taste brought in 2,600 students.
Lovett said she is excited about this year because there will be more student participation. There will be bellydancing, a Global fashion show and a steel drum band, which will all be performed by student groups.
Students can also participate for free because, unlike last year, the activities will be separate from the food.
"Students don't necessarily have to feel like they're missing out," Lovett said.
Although the event has been moved inside, Lovett said there will still be camels in the front lawn, which were very popular last year.
The Amazing Taste is from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight in the Student Center. An international dance party will follow from 8 to 10 p.m. The food price is $7.55 or a meal swipe for students, $8 for non-students ages 13 and up, and $5 for ages three to 12. Ages two and under are free.
