Muncie Civic Theatre and Cornerstone Center for the Arts have joined to present a musical production of "Cinderella Kids," which will be directed by Ball State students.
Ball State Students worked with the cast, ages 6-15, on eight Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., during which actors received lessons from theater education majors.
"Working with these kids has changed me a lot," said Hailey Burden, associate director of the musical and senior theater education major. "They challenge me to learn more so that I'm prepared to answer their questions, and they really make me think about teaching."
There are two groups — the green group and the blue group — with 39 cast members in each. Each cast will put on two performances.
"I get to use a lot of things from class in practice, and I feel better prepared to go out and teach in the real world because of these kids," Burden, said.
The play's message stays near to the classic Cinderella tale. Cinderella's persistence pays off, her dreams come true and she ultimately marries her prince charming. As Disney fans of all ages follow Cinderella through her classic fairy tale, they will be reminded dreams are important, Burden said.
"This show brings theater to the children of the Muncie community, which is especially important because our kids do not have a theater program at their school," said Kathryn O'Keefe, director of the musical and senior theater education major. "This is a chance for these kids to show how talented they are."
Burden, Daria Tanella, musical director, and Kelsey Regina, assistant stage manager, are working with O'Keefe to make the production possible. Burden said that her favorite parts of the show are the scenes with the stepsisters.
"I've done a lot of work with them, and they always bring new ideas that are ridiculously funny," Burden said.
The show is based on a screenplay by Ken Anderson and Homer Brightman. It will feature music and lyrics by Mack David, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston. The music was adapted and arranged by Bryan Louiselle.
Shows will be held at Cornerstone's Edmund Burke Ball Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets cost $5 and they can be purchased at the Muncie Civic Theatre Box Office and online at munciecivic.org, over the phone at 765-288-7529 Ext. 2 or at the door.
