Women had the opportunity to buy a date with the man of their choice at an auction on Thursday.
The third-annual date auction was held by the Ball State University Dance Marathon. BSUDM President Michael Bramer said the date auction raised $1,455, which came close to beating last year's total of $1,855.
Bidders had 26 male students turning on their charm and good looks to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
The highest bid went to senior architecture major Paul Desmond. Desmond inspired much laughter in the room with his shorty shorts bearing the words "'Merica" on the back, as well as having two students engage in fierce back-and-forth bid which ended up at $200. Desmond's winning bid was from a bidder one wouldn't expect on the telephone.
"My big sis had the winning bid over the phone," Desmond said. "This year's auction was a very humbling experience. I'm just glad I could help the kids out at Riley."
Other participants, such as Tyler Rosberg, are looking forward their upcoming dates.
"I didn't know what to expect since this was my first year involved," said Rosberg, a junior hospitality and food management major. "I'm not sure where I'll take the girl that bid on me for a date yet, but I'll treat her nice."
The night ended with this year's auctioneer, Chad Griewank, being taken for a bid of $150.
"My voice is shot, so that should say how successful this was," said Griewank, also a junior hospitality and food management major.
More fundraising events for the BSUDM and the kids at Riley will be held in December, including a lunch or dinner at Carino's Italian on Dec. 1, and a BSUDM hosted event called "Tacky Prom" on Dec. 8.
