WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State survives upset bid by Toledo

Cardinals win 3-2 despite losing the fourth game 25-14

If Ball State didn't prove its resiliency enough by beating Northern Illinois in a five-game match earlier this month, it gave Ball State fans a reminder tonight against Toledo.

After being thoroughly dominated in game four by the Rockets, losing 25-14, the Cardinals found renewed life in the fifth frame.

That life came from Kelsey Brandl, who proved why her jump serve is one of the most feared in the Mid-American Conference. With the score tied at 15 all, Brandl hit a match-winning service ace following a Toledo attack error to win the fifth set 17-15.

Brandl's winning ace also came almost one week after junior libero Catie Fredrich hit a match-winning ace against Miami.

Junior outside attacker Kara Bates hit a team-high 18 kills in the match. Senior middle blocker Jennifer Boyd ended up with 14 kills, while Brandl had 11.

Fredrich made her first case to win MAC West Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth week in a row with 23 digs. Brandl's winning ace also came almost one week after Fredrich hit a match-winning ace against Miami.

Boyd left the fourth game with an injury and did not return for the fifth set.

Ball State improves to 21-3 overall this season and 10-1 in the MAC. The Cardinals will finish their weekend against Buffalo on Saturday at home. First serve is at 7 p.m.
