WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State finishes MAC Invitational with 9-9 record

Freshman Courtney Wild wins both her matches to take the championship in her bracket

The Ball State women's tennis team concluded its final day of action at the MAC Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals went 9-9 overall, 8-7 on singles and 1-2 on doubles.

Freshman Courtney Wild defeated Toledo's Kelsey Anonsen, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0, then later went on to beat Eastern Michigan's Mariya Toncheva, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0, to win the championship of her bracket.

Ashlyn Rang had a tough singles day, first losing to Eastern Michigan's Daphne Friedrichs, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0, then was defeated by Northern Illinois' Haley Dekkinga, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.

Sophomore Kristel Sanders was beaten by eventual "B" bracket champion, Nikki Chiricosta of Bowling Green, 6-1, 6-2. Sanders also fell to Toledo's Lexy Pitt, 6-0, 6-4.

Junior Paola Rodriguez beat Ilse Pacheco of Northern Illinois, 6-2, 6-4.

Fellow junior Lauren Pickerell beat Georgia De Lisle-Tarr from Eastern Michigan, 6-0, 6-4, then also crushed Pacheco, 6-1, 6-0.

Ball State's senior Kylee Johnson defeated Arantza De La Torre of Northern Illinois, 6-3, 6-3, then lost to Jade Johnson of Bowling Green, 6-4, 6-0.

Johnson's teammate Dena Boulieris defeated Mary Malkin of Northern Illinois, 6-1, 6-3, but then lost to Nelle Youel.

Fellow senior Sarah Hebble beat Toledo's Amanda Border, 6-3, 6-3. Hebble then was beaten by Eastern Michigan's Marcela Rivero, 6-1, 6-1.

In Saturday's doubles action, the tandem of Sanders and Wild defeated Eastern Michigan's April Kerr and Rachel Denny, 8-4.

However, that was the only doubles win the Cardinals would get on Saturday, as the team of Rang and Boulieris fell to Chiricosta and Maddy Eccleston of Bowling Green, 8-3.

Finally, Pickerell/Hebble lost to Emily Reuland and Johnson, also from Bowling Green, 8-3.

Ball State's next match is the Ball State Invitational on Oct. 7-8.
