Tonight from 8 to 10 p.m., students will put beer goggles on and bowl for free at Cardinal Lanes in the Student Center as part of Alcohol Awareness week.
Alyssa France, sophomore nursing major, is the chairwoman for the event. She came up with the idea last spring and decided to implement it for the week.
Students will put on the beer goggles and bowl once or twice under the supervision of senators from the Student Government Association. Safety is a concern, France said, because they don't want anyone throwing the bowling ball anywhere else besides down their lane.
After they see how drinking affects their sight, students can bowl normally. The beer goggles show how disorienting being drunk can be. France said the point of the event is to educate the students on how to be safe when consuming alcohol.
"In reality, students are going to drink, so we want to teach them how to be smart about it," she said.
Along with bowling with beer goggles, SGA will be educating students about the dangers of alcohol and what to do if someone may have alcohol poisoning. They want students to have fun while learning about something serious.
"We thought this would be a fun way to do it, but we don't want to make too light of a situation," France said.
She feels the event is a way to care for people, which is why she is becoming a nurse.
"I'm going into nursing because I like to help people, so helping the Ball State community is something I'd like to do," she said.
France hopes to see a lot of people show up because the money that is used for the event comes from the students' tuition, and it will benefit them if they go.
Alcohol Awareness week was two weeks ago, but the event had to be postponed because of scheduling issues.
