QL's Bar-B-Que joins Grandma Betty's in the Village

Only a few months after opening in the Village, Grandma Betty's Ice Cream Shop has a new addition to its business.

The ice cream shop partnered with QL's Bar-B-Que, a restaurant originally located on Wolfe Street, south of campus.

QL's main location is under renovation and the owners decided to team up with the owner of Grandma Betty's in order to stay in business and make new customers.

Christy Prater, manager of Grandma Betty's, said although the presence of the barbecue restaurant is only a trial run, the two companies thrive well together and feed off of each other's previous customers.

Prater said the two businesses decided to team up to help each other as members of the local community.

"[We wanted to] offer the students at Ball State home cooked meals, instead of the regular campus food or fast food at reasonable prices," Prater said.

QL's has a limited menu at its new location, but the most popular item in its menu is its pork meat tips sandwich. Their sides include macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and green beans.

Paula Crumes, owner of QL's, said she would like to keep her business in the Village.

"When our business is back up and running, we'd hope to keep our station here, as well," Crumes said.

Grandma Betty's moved from downtown Muncie to the Village in April 2011. The owner, Jeannine Lake, named the shop after her mother, Betty Jean Lee, when the business opened six years ago. She said she felt the one thing missing in the Village was an ice cream shop.

Grandma Betty's has 32 ice cream flavors which are $1.50 for one small scoop and $2.04 for two small scoops .

"So far business has been going great," Prater said. "We plan on keeping the shop open in the winter time with the ice cream and maybe adding a few other menu items for the cold weather."

They plan on coming up with special deals around busier times to gain the business of more students.

"This is a great location and [Lake] had been wanting to move over here for some time," Prater said. "The shop's location is fairly new and they are still adjusting to the new customers, but they enjoy the people and plan on expanding the menu in the new future."

They offer cones, cups, shakes and sundaes at prices that are cheaper than Dairy Queen and Baskin-Robbins and at a closer location. The most popular ice cream selections include Birthday Cake, Blue Moon — dyed vanilla ice cream — and Pumpkin, which has arrived just in time for the fall season.
