FOOTBALL: Ball State trails by two touchdowns after first quarter

Homecoming had a promising start for Ball State, only to fizzle out and turn into a 14-0 lead for Temple after the first quarter.

The Cardinals received the opening kickoff and drove to the Owls' 21-yard line before a sack on third down forced Steven Schott to attempt a 46-yard field goal. Schott pushed the kick wide left, his third miss of the season.

Temple then drove 71 yards to take the lead with a 24-yard pass from Chester Stewart to wide receiver Joe Jones. Jones was uncovered on the play and got into the end zone with the help of a stiff arm at about the five-yard line.

The Owls pushed their lead to two-touchdowns in the final minute of the quarter with a two-yard run by Bernard Pierce. He tied the Temple career rushing touchdown record and is now tied for the most in the nation this year.

Pierce's touchdown took advantage of Keith Wenning's fourth interception of the year, all coming in the last two weeks. He appeared to have a miscommunication with wide receiver Briggs Orsbon on a route and the pass went right to safety Justin Gildea. Stewart found wide receiver Rod Streater down the sideline for a 42-yard completion, setting up Pierce for the score.
