Appearing reenergized after Steven Schott's field goal as the first half expired, Ball State scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead from Central Michigan. The Cardinals hold a 24-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.
After the Chippewas started the second half with a 38-yard field goal, the Cardinals offense found its groove. Keith Wenning led Ball State on a 12-play, 88-yard drive, capped by a touchdown pass to Briggs Orsbon. It was Wenning's first touchdown pass since Sept. 24 against Army.
On the ensuing possession, the Cardinals defense forced its first turnover of the day. Defensive tackle Nathan Ollie forced a fumble, which was recovered by middle linebacker Travis Freeman on the Chippewas 38-yard line.
Ball State took advantage of its good field position and Jahwan Edwards ran for a one-yard touchdown four plays later.
It would take its first lead of the day less than four minutes later on a two-yard pass from Wenning to tight end Aaron Mershman. The Cardinals appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown on a long pass from Wenning to wide receiver Connor Ryan two plays before. The play was reviewed, however, and it was ruled Ryan stepped out at the three-yard line before diving into the end zone.
