Don't have $50 to spend on a Captain America or sexy kitten outfit from the mall? Looking original on Halloween doesn't have to break the bank. Below are some online costume ideas that can be created easily with items around your house or dorm.
"Cereal Killer"
Dress in all black and glue cereal boxes to your clothes with a hot glue gun. For the "killer" effect, stab plastic knives into the boxes. If you want to go even further, glue spoons and pieces of cereal all over your clothing. (idea from seventeen.com)
"The American Tourist"
Pair a large destination T-shirt with a pair of high-wasted, belted shorts for the classic "touristy" look. Don't forget a pair of sneakers, tube socks, your camera, map, some sort of hat, a fanny pack and a look that says, "I'm lost." (idea from robinsfyi.com)
"1960's Hippie"
This will be easy considering the hippie look is back in style. Grab a tie die shirt, bell-bottom jeans, anything with fringe on it and a headband. If you have face paint around, paint a peace sign on your cheeks. (idea from robinsfyi.com)
"‘80s Workout Wear"
You can pull this look right out of your closet. Throw on some leggings and a bright cut-off T-shirt. If you don't have leg warmers, grab some tall socks and cut off the toe. To finish it off, tease your hair into the big styles the ‘80s are known for.
"Miss America"
Put on a formal gown, oversized jewelry and heels. For the banner, use a long piece of white cloth or ribbon and write "Miss America" with a Sharpie or paint. Add gloves and a tiara if available. (idea from robinsfyi.com)
Sexy for less
Going for a more scandalous look this year, but don't have the cash to spend? Samantha Powers, sophomore entrepreneurship major, described her burlesque-themed costume she created with pieces she had around her place.
What she's using:
Fishnet tights
Black shorts
Corset
Tutu
Heels
"My friend and I really liked this idea, and since I never buy my costumes from a store, I usually just throw stuff together and only buy things when they're on clearance," Powers said. "I remember doing an 80's-themed costume. It was easy to do because all you need are some leggings, which almost every girl has, and then just cut up a T-shirt."
Popular costumes sold at shops in Muncie
Not in the mood to make your costume this year? Muncie's newest Halloween specialty store, Spirit Halloween, is the place to go for your every costume need. Katie Mentch, Spirit Halloween's store manager, spoke about the store's most popular costumes.
Mentch said zombies, as well as sexy cops, prisoners and nurses, seem to be selling more than other costumes.
"With the zombies, I feel like it's trending really well," Mentch said. "You see it all over TV and in the movies. The cops, prisoners and nurses are really just traditional costumes for women."
For those looking for a good deal, Spirit Halloween currently has a few promotions going on. Some of its costumes, as well as all of the shoes, are 25 percent off. The store also has a 20 percent off coupon online, Mentch said.
Spirit Halloween is located on 800 E. McGalliard Rd. For any questions, call 765-288-1961.
