Student Government Association decides to extend T-shirt trade-in

The task of spreading the Ball State spirit is not over for the Student Government Association.

The organization's T-shirt trade-in will continue into Family Weekend, Kayla Stanton, president of SGA, said.

The T-shirt trade-in, one of SGA's platform points to give away 1,000 T-shirts in exchange for gently used T-shirts from other universities and high schools, started last week at the Scramble Light. Old shirts SGA collects will be given to the Muncie Mission, an organization that offers food and shelter for the homeless in the community.

Over the course of the week, about 250 T-shirts were traded, but Stanton said SGA doesn't want to stop until it has 1,000 shirts to donate. To reach the goal, she plans to reach out to different audiences in different locations.

Today, students can trade in their T-shirt in the SGA office, L.A. Pittenger Student Center room 112. Friday, SGA will be in the Teacher's College lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and SGA will be in the tailgating lot from 11 a.m. until the start of the football game Saturday.

"[My favorite part] was the students getting really excited and getting a Ball State T-shirt," Stanton said.

Stanton shared some of her favorite stories from the event.

Stanton said there was a student wearing a Purdue shirt, and SGA began heckling him to take it off and trade it in. They finally convinced him, and he traded shirts right there at the Scramble Light.

"We were proud of him," she said.

Stanton said a visiting student wanted a T-shirt during the trade-in, but he didn't have one to exchange. SGA members could see how much he wanted a Ball State shirt, so they gave it to him in the hopes he would spread Ball State spirit to his hometown.

Minutes later, a student donated a shirt, but did not want one in return. Stanton said she was happy how it worked out.

"We've seen nothing but good response from it and we're thrilled students are as excited as we are," she said. "We definitely want to continue [the trade-in]."
