This year's McGovern lecturer will call upon Ball State students to raise awareness about the negative effects of bullying tonight.
Kevin Jennings, CEO of Be the Change, will speak about the impact of bullying in the field of education and on the health of individuals at 7 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.
"The annual McGovern lecture is made possible by the generosity of John McGovern, a former Ball State physicist," said Michelle Jones, multimedia specialist for department of physiology and health science. "It is held to honor an individual who has made a significant impact in the field of health."
At his lecture "Bullying: An Education and Health Crisis," Jennings is expected to talk about his many experiences including being a high school history teacher, founding the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, being assistant deputy secretary of education and his status as the CEO of Be the Change.
Jennings will also address ways to reduce or stop bullying in the education field in order to prevent the negative effects it could have on one's health.
Upon delivering his speech, there will be an invitation-only dinner in Jennings' honor. The Ball State McGovern Committee will present Jennings with a medallion thanking him for his landmark contributions.
The event is open to the general public. In a statement, Jones said the event will be aimed at people with different background and knowledge on the issue.
"This lecture has a broad appeal to those who are in education, counseling or whom work with the public," she said.
